The Smart division of auto giant DaimlerChrysler is mulling a launch of its range of two-seater cars in the USA – with a decision expected by the year end.

“The chances are increasing,” revealed Smart’s chief executive Andreas Renschler, adding that working committees are assessing the marque’s chances in the American market.

The Smart range has staged a remarkable recovery after appearing doomed to withdrawal. In the last year, new models have been added and production has risen 10%.

It will also make a first foray outside its European homeland in the fall, with a launch in Japan. However, an operating profit is not expected until 2004.
