SIMPLIFY TARIFFS, PHONE COMPANIES TOLD

Telcoms watchdog Oftel is getting increasingly peeved with phone companies that disguise their true prices in a maze of complex special discounts and short-term offerings [decrypting which would tax the ingenuity even of Alan Turing!]. Oftel's new director-general David Edmonds has written to the chief executives of all the major suppliers of domestic telecoms services threatening legislation if they fail to publish full information on prices. The muscle-flexing aims to ensure that residential customers can compare prices more easily.
