A bill banning all advertising and sponsorship for tobacco and alcohol, including beer, was approved this week by the Brazilian Senate's Commission of Constitution & Justice. The bill now moves to other congressional bodies for further consideration.

Brazil’s tobacco and alcohol advertising market is currently self-regulatory, with an estimated annual value of around $500 million. The ban, if imposed, "may bring similar efforts to introduce censorship in other Latin American countries,'' claims International Advertising Association president, David Hanger.
