The quarterly Marketing Monitor from bean-counters Willott Kingston Smith shows that continuing growth in the direct marketing industry has pushed salaries to a record level. Employment costs per head have risen from an index of 100 in 1985 to 165.2 this year, causing operating margins to fall from 15.9% to 11.2% over the same period.
