Reuters last week appointed Kevin McCarten, formerly a director at supermarket chain J Sainsbury and an executive at Procter & Gamble, as its chief marketing officer.

McCarten will take charge of a marketing and communications strategy spanning the whole of the news and information group. He will be answerable to Jean-Claude Marchand, Reuters’ executive director for group marketing.

Commented chief executive Peter Job: “The onward march of the internet, and our success in selling to internet sites, is substantially increasing our reach and our opportunity”.

He added: “We have recognised for some time that we need to bring in top-class marketing expertise to help us penetrate a much broader community of users. Kevin McCarten's appointment to his newly created role is an important step in this direction”.
