Regulator Vetoes Johnston Purchase of Four UK Regional Titles

News, 08 May 2002

The purchase by Johnston Press of several UK regional newspapers from Trinity Mirror has run into regulatory refusal.

Melanie Johnson, under-secretary of state for competition, consumers and markets, has decided to accept a recommendation from the Competition Commission that Johnston’s acquisition of four Herald & Post titles in the East Midlands be blocked.

However, the purchase of four other titles in the region has been given the go-ahead.

If all eight titles were transferred to Johnston, decided the minister, the media group would gain a virtual monopoly in the Northampton and Peterborough local markets.
