Mexican broadcast giant Grupo Televisa reported a 23% jump in Q4 profits, pushing the full-year total to $148.9 million (1.35 billion pesos) in the black, up from a loss of $91m (825.2m pesos) in 2000.

However, hit by the contracting Mexican economy and the strength of the nation’s currency, fourth-quarter EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) dropped 18% to $187m, while sales slid over 5% to $624m and operating income tumbled 21% to $155m.

The company is “cautiously optimistic” about the coming year, following record upfront sales for 2002 of $1.14bn.
