Poor Start to US Newspapers' Year

   NEW YORK - The New York Times Company, McClatchy Company and Tribune Company newspaper publishers have posted sharply lower quarterly earnings on high newsprint costs and depressed advertising sales.
   For Q1, net income fell 14% at McClatchy to $27.7 million (€22.8m; £15.8m); 28% at Tribune to $103 million; and 69% at NYT to $35m.
