PARIS: Alcoholic drinks giant Pernod Ricard is popping corks after its success in the auction for Sweden's Vin&Sprit, maker of the Absolut vodka brand.

The French-headquartered firm, whose brands include Chivas Regal whisky, Beefeater gin and Jacobs Creek wines, bid €5.62 billion ($8.78bn; £4.43bn) to beat rivals Bacardi, Fortune and a Swedish private equity group.

The win will give Pernod a 14% share of the world's biggest drinks market – the US- where global number one Diageo has 26%.
