SYDNEY - James Packer, executive chairman of the Publishing & Broadcasting media conglomerate, addressing the Digital Marketing Summit in Sydney this week, labelled Australia's internet speeds embarrassing, criticised Telstra's broadband pricing plans and download restrictions, and called on the Federal Government and regulators to address the issues quickly.
Packer said Australian media companies urgently needed faster broadband speeds to meet surging demand for video downloads of news and entertainment, including current episodes of TV shows.
He told the gathering of six hundred media buyers, advertisers and internet analysts that broadband takeup had been a "key driver" of online advertising growth, which had exceeded 60% in the past two years.
