CANBERRA: Australian consumers are still spending despite increases in gasoline prices.
The latest Cashcard Retail Activity Index shows spending levels reached an adjusted A$17.9 billion ($13.65bn; €10.61bn; £7.16bn) for July. Growth last month rose 0.6% following a 0.4% increase in June and 0.9% rise in May.
Significant promotional activities by retailers have boosted sales, in contrast to an initial quiet start for spending in 2006.
