Online Adspend Sinks 26% in Q1

Internet adspend fell 26% over the course of the first quarter, although it surpassed the equivalent period last year, according to AdZone Market Research.

In a survey of 2,500 American websites accounting for over 95% of US internet ad revenue, AdZone found that online adspend tumbled from $1.8 billion in January to $1.47bn in March. However, the total for the quarter is 90.2% higher than Q1 2000.

The research firm predicted that the internet ad market will revive in the second and third quarters, concluding that the web remains a viable channel for advertising.

Leading the field as the biggest internet advertiser in March was Amazon.com, which spent $30.8m marketing its brand online. Meanwhile, the top three sites in terms of ad revenue were AOL.com ($45.8m), Yahoo.com ($43.3m) and ESPN.GO.com ($31.6m).
