The latest survey by French media monitoring agency Secodip shows a massive surge in online advertising, with the number of advertisers multiplying more than tenfold.

According to Secodip's AdNetTrack monitoring service, the number of advertisers between January 1999 and May 2000 soared from 101 to 1,277, while individual banner ads increased from 306 to 6,700.

Among the two hundred-plus websites monitored, the top advertiser is France Telecom, placing 1,020 banner ads over the period. The number two slot is filled by discount music retailer Scopus with 822 banner ads, while e-tailer Marcopoly is third with 742 ads.

Other major domestic advertisers are LibertySurf Group and online auctioneer iBazar who lead a number of multinationals including Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard and Bertelsmann-owned Books OnLine.

Telecommunications is the biggest spending sector with 35% of all banner ads, followed by retailer distribution (14%), services suppliers (13%), computers and technology (11%), and media (8%).
