A SURVEY CARRIED OUT in October for the Chartered Institute of Marketing reveals that 18% of responding companies believe they will lay-off sales and marketing staff before the end of their current fiscal - as opposed to a mere 7% in April. However, the outlook is not all gloom: 46% of companies envisage no change in staffing levels and 36% plan to recruit. The study suggests a major shift over the year ahead in the type of industries employing marketers. Light manufacturing is likely to be the worst-hit sector, whereas 27% of heavy manufacturers expect to increase the number of sales and marketing people.
