Pay-TV broadcaster ONdigital reported yesterday that subscriber numbers rose 15% to 774,000 in the three months ended June30. This puts the Granada/Carlton-owned company squarely on course to meet its self-imposed target of one million subscribers by the end of 2000. A tripling of subscriber numbers during the past year indicates that it will hit two million by the end of 2002.
The broadcaster is also poised to launch its internet service ONnet this fall, for which it has already recruited a number of partners including Abbey National’s new internet bank Cahoot, and is negotiating with almost 100 more. A new premium sports channel is planned for next year.
However, ONdigital still lags satellite rival Sky Digital by a considerable margin. Sky claimed 3.4 million digital subscribers at the end of March.
