Britain’s public broadcaster the BBC is to be investigated by the Office of Fair Trading over its plans to launch a group of freely available digital TV and radio channels.
The OFT will advise culture secretary Chris Smith on whether the BBC’s proposed £300 million investment in digital broadcasting could harm the commercial sector.
BBC director general Greg Dyke wants to secure the firm’s position in the digital market by setting up four TV channels and five radio stations.
Commercial network Telewest greeted the OFT probe, saying that the new BBC channels should stick to areas where the commercial sector was failing to perform adequately.
