Bob Jeffrey, president of J Walter Thompson North America, is to become the network’s global president/ceo.
Jeffrey, 48, will replace Peter Schweitzer, who has headed JWT’s worldwide operations since 2001. The outgoing ceo oversees the Ford Motor Company account – the biggest single piece of business both for JWT and its parent WPP Group.
Jeffrey’s promotion is expected to be rubber-stamped at a meeting of the agency’s global management next month. Schweitzer will then stay on one year in the role of chairman as Jeffrey takes over (though this will not affect chairman emeritus Burt Manning).
The incoming ceo has been Schweitzer’s heir apparent since he took charge of the North American division two years ago. He joined the agency in 1998, before which he was managing director of Lowe & Partners in San Francisco.
