NEW YORK: US owners of Nintendo's Wii games console will be able to stream movies and TV shows via Netflix from the spring.

Customers will need to pay for a Netflix subscription, which start at $8.99 (€6.21, £5.53) per month, to access the content.

A similar service is already offered to users of Sony's PlayStation 3 console.

Meanwhile, Microsoft also signed a deal with Netflix recently, allowing "Gold" members of Xbox Live, who pay an annual subscription of $50 (€35, £31), access to movies and shows.

"Our goal is to offer Netflix members as many ways as possible to watch movies and TV episodes streamed from Netflix right to their TVs and to give non-members more and compelling reasons to consider the service," said Netflix co-founder and ceo Reed Hastings.

Wii is the top-selling current-generation games console in the US, shipping over 26m units since its launch in November 2006, including the 3m sold during December 2009.

Latest figures from Netflix, covering the period to the end of September 2009, suggest the firm retains 11.1 million US subscribers.
