With the ball firmly in its court, Nielsen Media Research has responded angrily to the lawsuit filed against it by Univision Communications.

The lawsuit attempts to block Nielsen's plans to introduce its controversial Local People Meters in Los Angeles on July 8 [WAMN:11-Jun-04].

While Univision claims the measurement system undercounts black and Hispanic TV viewers, Nielsen retorts that Univision is guilty of maintaining "inflated, less accurate ratings for certain of its programs over those of its competitors whose ratings are rising."

Another Nielsen opponent, the Don't Count Us Out Coalition reported to the Los Angeles city council its fears over TV stations showing fewer programs for the black and Hispanic market as a result of LPM usage in the area.
