PARIS: Traffic levels to websites from wireless devices like tablets and smartphones have increased dramatically in France during the last year, new figures show.

Research firm Médiamétrie has recently assessed the proportion of online activity attributable to various different operating systems in April 2011, and found that approximately 90% of hits were generated from computers powered by Microsoft's Windows.

While Windows remains the dominant channel, its lead over rivals has decreased when measured against the previous year.

The primary beneficiary of this decline was Apple's Mac OS, which whose share rose by two percentage points to 7%.

Elsewhere, the total registered by gadgets such as tablets and smartphones rose three times over, representing 2.6% of all visits recorded in April 2011.

These ratings drew on data from Apple's iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, alongside Google Android, Research in Motion's BlackBerry and the Windows Phone, but did not include apps.
