The Deceptive Mail Prevention and Enforcement Act, legislation controlling sweepstake marketing and signed by President Clinton twelve months ago, is now in effect.

All sweepstake mailings must feature instructions enabling consumers to have their names removed from mailing lists, while list owners are compelled to fulfill all such requests within sixty days.

According to the bill’s sponsor, the Republican Senator for Maine Susan Collins, it will ensure that "sweepstakes companies will no longer be able to flood the mailboxes of individuals who don't want these mailings."
