NTL TRUMPS SKY FOR PREMIER LEAGUE TV RIGHTS

News, 30 May 2000

Britain’s largest cable network, US-owned NTL (in which Microsoft holds a substantial stake), has won UK sports broadcasting’s greatest potential moneyspinner with a £1.75 billion offer for the rights to broadcast Premier League matches.

NTL’s bid is said to be £250m higher than former incumbent BSkyB, while ONdigital is the other also-ran in the contest to broadcast 66 live soccer matches and forty pay-per-view games per season.
