NEW VIRUS TARGETS HANDHELD COMPUTERS AND WAP-PHONES

News, 07 June 2000

A new virus designed to attack cell phones with text capabilities also poses a serious threat to handheld computers, pagers and phones, according to three leading anti-virus companies.

The latest bug attacked text-phones on Spain’s Telefonica cellular network but was detected and halted before any known damage was caused. Called Timofonica (in Spanish, 'timo' means 'prank') the bug works in similar fashion to the recent notorious Love Letter virus [WAMN, 4-May-00].

Security experts say that Timofonica could easily be altered to attack the millions of cellphones and pagers in global use. They also warn that it portends possible attacks on other handheld devices like Palm Pilots and Microsoft Pocket PCs.
