NEW YORK: NBC Universal is to launch twenty new local TV channels in 23 countries as it attempts to boost income from its Global Networks Division.

The planned expansion into Asia, India, Russia and Eastern Europe will mark a significant increase in the twelve local versions of NBC channels currently operating in 35 different countries.

NBCU president/ceo Jeff Zucker has been looking for ways to further the reach of NBC's various network, cable TV and filmed entertainment offerings.

He said: "We promised that international growth would be one of our key areas in focus and this first step underlines our determination to grow our business throughout the world."
