US auto racing governing body NASCAR has fined driver Jimmie Johnson $10,000 (€8,330; £5,500) for obscuring a display bottle of Powerade from television view after winning the Pennsylvania 500 race last Sunday.

Johnson placed a sign for Lowe's home improvement store, his primary sponsor, in front of the Powerade bottle (made by Coca-Cola, official NASCAR sponsor).

Admitting that the action was 'an expensive move' on his part, Johnson says he will be looking for a "new way to protect my sponsor when I get out of the race car".

Amid a sports drink sponsorship war, NASCAR fined Johnson for 'actions detrimental to stock car racing', following a warning last month to stop drivers interfering with sponsors' products.
