Satellite broadcaster BSkyB will this week ignore appeals from consumer groups and begin the switch-off of its analogue broadcasting signal.

The move follows a major promotional drive by Sky to persuade its analogue subscribers to switch to digital and is seen by some as an attempt to bulldoze customers out of their indifference to the new technology.

It also defies a request from the UK government which has asked all broadcasters to wait until 2006 before starting to phase-out analogue signals.

Four analogue channels will go dark this week – Sky Moviemax, Sky Sports 1 and 3 and Sky News – shortly to be followed by shopping network QVC and the Disney Channel.
