Sky PerfecTV, the broadcast and marketing consultancy controlled by Rupert Murdoch’s Newscorp in partnership with Itochu, Softbank Corporation, Sony and Fuji Television, will offer subscribers to its associated satellite channels free access to all sixty-four soccer matches in the upcoming 2002 World Cup, May 31 through June 30.

The offer is intended to recruit new subscribers to its 2.5 million base. Sky PerfecTV secured the broadcast rights to the tournament last summer for a fee unstated – but thought to be in the region of ¥12 billion, the largest ever paid in a single broadcast sports deal.
