Another contender has joined the race to buy the regional newspaper publishing business of British media group SMG.
The latest bidder is David Montgomery, former ceo of Mirror Group Newspapers. His offer is supported by venture capitalist firm 3i, which also backed Montgomery in his failed attempt to buy Express Newspapers.
Montgomery is thought to have a good chance of taking over the business, not least because he served on the SMG board while at Mirror Group.
Among other bidders for the assets – which include the Herald, Sunday Herald and Evening Times titles in Scotland – are publishers Guardian Media Group, Associated Newspapers and Johnston Press, and venture capital firms Candover, Permira and Cinven.
