PARIS: More than a third of French consumers now access the mobile internet, with the top 20 websites attracting the vast majority of this audience, new figures show.

Médiamétrie, the research firm, stated that 20.4m people utilised this medium in August 2012, equivalent to 37.7% of the population.

A 91.5% share of this group logged on through a browser, and 72.2% did so via a smartphone application.

The top 20 sites collectively received 97% of mobile internet users. Some 16.5m individuals made entries on Google, the search engine, in August, ahead of Facebook, the social network, on 14.3m.

YouTube, the video-sharing platform, secured 11m visitors, with iTunes, Apple's music service, on 8m, a score matched by Orange, the telecoms provider.

The top three properties in terms of popularity when looking at web browsers alone remained the same, with Google on 15.5m visitors, bettering Facebook on 14.1m and YouTube on 8.9m.

Google also had the most commonly-used app, which was utilised by 11.5m people. YouTube posted 9m users here, followed by iTunes, on just under 8m.
