PARIS: Consumers in France are participating in an increasingly diverse range of activities using the mobile web, a study has shown.

GroupM and SFR revealed that 76% of phones now in use offer multimedia functionality, split at 38% each between smartphones - a 20% improvement year on year - and simpler, "intermediate" gadgets.

Apple's iPhone holds 27% of the smartphone market, beating Samsung's 26%, Nokia's 14%, BlackBerry's 10%, and HTC's 8%.

Elsewhere, the report stated a third of the mobile internet audience, or 11.4m people, log in at least once a week, a 59% lift year on year.

Roughly 33% of 16-24 year olds engaged in this pastime on a daily basis, and 86% of the youthful demographic possess a handset boasting online capabilities.

Some 61% of the connected population accessed the mobile web while on the move, and 55% did so at home.

Another 25% have purchased something, such as music, games or travel tickets via their phone, and 81% - or 9.2m - had watched video through this route, including 37% doing so every day.

One key contributor behind the overall positive trend is the rising amount of subscribers with unlimited packages, growing from 10% in 2008 to 26% today.

The average number of application downloads has also doubled during the last year, and currently stands at 20.6 free apps, and 3.2 paid-for apps.
