REDMOND, Washington: Microsoft may have announced 5,000 job cuts last week, but according to ceo Steve Ballmer it is keen on making one key addition, in the form of Yahoo's online search operations.
Asked, during a conference call with investors last week, if he was interested in a deal with Yahoo, Ballmer confirmed: "We would like to do one."
Despite the job cuts, Ballmer added that the company will continue to develop its internet search capabilities as it seeks to catch up with Google.
Quoth he: "Even as we take out 5,000 jobs, we will also add a few thousands jobs back into areas like search where we continue to see incredible opportunity to do good work."
Microsoft's loss-making online operation posted revenues of $866 million (€677m; £638m) in the last quarter, only $3m up on the year-ago period.
