Microsoft has begun trials of its troubled interactive TV service in Portugal.

Offered in conjunction with TV Cabo Portugal, the trial was described as a “significant step” by Microsoft vice-president Alan Yates, even though the system being tested in Portugal is slightly less complex than those under development elsewhere. The software giant has experienced software supply problems with other partners such as AT&T in the US and United Pan-Europe Communications in the Netherlands, delaying scheduled launches.

A major roll-out of the service to TV Cabo subscribers is anticipated by the second quarter of 2001.
