As predicted [WAMN: 14-Jan-02], Metro International, the Swedish-owned London-headquartered freesheet empire, is to take to the streets of Paris this week with its latest launch under the Metro masthead.

With a scheduled print run of around 300,000 copies daily, hand-distributed Metro will boast the largest circulation in central Paris. However, the fledgling has yet to receive permission from the capital's mayor to install its pick-up boxes on the city's streets – whereas upcoming Norwegian rival 20 Minutes has signed a distribution agreement with French rail network SNCF although it has yet to announce a launch date.

The Paris edition will be Metro’s 22nd launch since it began in Stockholm seven years ago. Printed in thirteen languages across 16 countries, the latest venture lifts the group’s international readership to around ten million.
