With one week still to go until The Day, the holiday season is clearly in full swing – if the paucity of hard ad industry news is anything to go by!

Presumably the news famine also hit Rupert Murdoch’s august organ, The Times of London, Tuesday’s edition of which confided that – gasp – WPP Group ceo Sir Martin Sorrell is this year sending electronic Christmas cards.

Admittedly, that news barely registers on WAMN’s wow-o-meter … but eat what you can in hard times. Let Martin Waller, The Times’ breathless City diarist take up the story ...

‘No one is quite sure how it happened — a wrong button pressed perhaps? — but the ‘cards’ have gone out in huge numbers and seem to be reproducing alarmingly in the electronic ether.

“I know of one august executive who has already received four. Michael Green, at Carlton, got seven,” Sorrell tells me, gleefully, adding: “He’s overcome. It’s the first time in his life he got seven Christmas cards”.’

WAMN sympathizes with diarist Waller. After twelve months of reporting the doings of the denizens in the parallel universe of money manipulation, perhaps this is real news?
