OAK BROOK, ILLINOIS - Fast food titan McDonald's reports its second-quarter profit rose as soccer World Cup marketing boosted revenues in Europe plus income from the sale of shares in Chipotle Mexican Grill.
European sales rose on the strength of World Cup ticket giveaways in the UK and a Big Mac promotion in Germany, the tournament's host nation. In the US, sales at grew 4.2% as meals linked to the movie Cars and coffee advertising increased demand.
Same-store sales in Europe gained 6.3%, outpacing growth in the US. Comparable sales increased 7.2% in Asia, the Pacific region, the Middle East and Africa, on the strength of results in Japan and Australia.
