The world's largest fast food chain has teamed with investment group Accel-KKR of Palo Alto, California, to form eMac Digital, a joint online venture aimed at cutting costs and developing new markets and distribution channels for food service companies.

Based in Chicago, EMac Digital will have its own board of directors and focus initially on establishing new ways to help food companies streamline operations. It also aims to create online marketplaces in which food trade buyers will be matched with sellers.

The venture is McDonald's first move of any significance to harness the web to business cost reduction.
