A NEW UNIVERSAL barcoding system launched by start-up company Udex has attracted some major names to its pilot scheme. Among the triallists are A C Nielsen, Asda, Lever Brothers, Procter & Gamble and Taylor Nelson Sofres. At present, there is no global conformity in the barcoding of products, creating problems in exchanging data between manufacturers, retailers and market researchers. The Udex system is based on a structured, common precept for barcodes, operating to global standards within product groups. Founded by four prominent market researchers, Udex is backed by 3i to the tune of £1m.
