LONDON - Publisher News International, owner of The Times, is planning to launch a free afternoon paper in London, without waiting for Transport for London's Tube station distribution rights contest [WAMN: 06-Mar-06].
The move, which needs the green light from media magnate Rupert Murdoch, would bypass station newsstands in favor of people giving out the paper by hand to commuters.
TfL is expected to send out tenders to invited bidders in late June and could award the contract in the fall.
