Paris-based media giant Lagardere, whose diverse interests include Elle magazine – is centralising its individual new media businesses into a new global unit, Lagardere Active.

Bucking today’s lemming-like trend to downsize, the Lagardere revamp is directed toward expansion and increased investment. Emulating the Murdoch clan’s nepotist strategy, the enlarged venture will be led by Arnaud Lagardere, son of chairman Jean-Luc.

Lagardere’s worldwide tentacles embrace the US and the UK. In the former, its Hachette Filipacchi Magazines unit is one of the nation’s largest operators; while in Britain it holds 50% of Hachette Emap with Emap Group.
