Following plummeting US sales in June, America's Big Two automakers -- General Motors and Ford Motor Company -- announced a raft of free-handed rebates.

GM upped cashbacks to $5,000 on most sport-utility vehicles, with lesser payouts on other models; while Ford boosted incentives by up to $1,000 across its brand range.

This flurry of profligacy was triggered by Asian carmakers' gains last month at the expense of their US rivals.
