The trial of Martha Stewart – the US homemaking guru caught up in a distinctly unwholesome insider trading scandal – will commence January 12 2004.

A federal judge set the date after Stewart was indicted for securities fraud, obstruction of justice and making false statements to federal agents earlier this month [WAMN: 05-Jun-03]. The charges relate to Stewart’s sale of ImClone shares a day before their price plummeted and her subsequent statements to investigators.

Oral arguments from both sides will be heard on November 18, at which point Stewart’s lawyers are expected to call for the case to be dismissed.
