TOKYO: Japan's second largest broadband provider, Softbank, is mulling online television broadcasting to expand its services.
Ceo Masayoshi Son says integration of web content and on-demand video with live terrestrial TV programming is a logical step after the firm's acquisition last year of the country's third-largest cellphone network.
According to Son, the company will wait for airwaves to become available after the digital signal switchover in 2011, rather than acquiring a traditional TV business to implement its plans.
Softbank already offers a service enabling viewers to watch movies and some cable channels over its broadband network, but subscribers are few due to limited choice.
