TOKYO: Fiber-optic networks are becoming the broadband access method of choice in Japan, according to telco titan Nippon Telegraph and Telephone. The company says total fiber-optic customer numbers climbed to 6.08 million by the end of March, overtaking the ADSL access method for the first time.

NTT is stepping up marketing campaigns for its fiber-optic network, claiming faster transmission speeds for high-resolution video and internet telephony. It hopes to sign 30 million subscribers by 2010 - with 3.4m in this fiscal year.
