Retail sales in the US saw their fastest growth for four months in January, according to the US Commerce Department.
The figures, released yesterday, show a 0.7% jump in retail sales over the course of last month, the highest figure since September and way ahead of December’s 0.1% rise.
In fact, January’s growth outstripped all previous months since July if auto sales are excluded.
However, economists are not yet laying to rest the spectre of recession – the coldest November and December on record may have pushed some sales into the new year, distorting the figures.
