Martha Stewart, America's jailed icon of all things stylish, who inelegantly fibbed about her share dealings to federal investigators, has signed a reputed $8 million (€6.04m; £4.15m) deal with the NBC television network to present a cooking and lifestyle show from fall 2005.

Stewart (63), who is currently serving a five month jail sentence for her misdemeanour, will be released in March. She will then serve a similar term under an unusually gracious form of house arrest that allows her to run her multimillion exploitation corporation from her New England mansion.

The company, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, urgently needs its figurehead restored to respectability. In October it posted a Q3 loss of $15m, a 375% deterioration on the same period in 2003.

The news of Stewart's bigtime media rehabilitation therefore comes as a relief to the company and its shareholders. It triggered a 7.7% leap in MSLO shares on Wednesday.
