J Walter Thompson has forged an alliance with Chinese ad agency New Sun.
The WPP Group network has agreed a revenue-sharing deal with Guangzhou-headquartered New Sun, a 130-strong outfit led by managing director James Wong and his wife, executive creative director Li Ming.
According to Tom Doctoroff, ceo of JWT's Chinese unit, the pact signals a "mutual intent to aggressively pursue a substantially deeper financial relationship." Word is that the network will take a one-third stake in the Chinese agency in the next few months.
Doctoroff admits that JWT clients in southern China "could use on-the-ground support from Guangzhou."
