The Broadcasting Commission of Ireland is reviewing the country's advertising codes.

The regulatory overhaul is expected to be completed in the next few months and should clarify what can or cannot be promoted on Irish TV and radio.

Currently, products and services such as condoms are banned from the airwaves, as are contact lenses, loans and betting.

In the case of the latter, the line dividing what is permissable and what is not is fuzzy: commercials that encourage people to bet are banned, while those that simply mention what betting options are available are allowed.

To add to the fog, many prohibited products can be advertised in print. Meantime, Irish media, advertisiers and agencies are crossing their fingers that the review will lead to more flexible rules.
