The latest in a line of reported suitors for the hand of Chicago-headquartered True North Communications is Interpublic, the world’s third largest advertising group [after WPP and Omnicom]. Former Romeos include Cordiant Communications and Havas Advertising.
True North, holding company for FCB Worldwide, is said to be receptive to a marriage with the right global suitor, the more so since losing its flagship account DaimlerChrysler to BBDO [WAMN: 6-Nov-00]. This resulted in 150 job losses and lopped $140 million from the group’s bottom line.
The smart money is now on Interpublic but those prone to bet on longer odds say that Havas may re-enter the wooing with a larger box of chocolates.
