The online video advertising market in the US is set to grow to $1.5 billion (€1.27bn; £865m) by 2009, according a new report.

Research firm eMarketer, based in New York, claims spending this year will top $225 million as more homes sign up for high speed internet connections.

Currently the number of broadband homes in the US stands at 42m, a 23% increase from 2004. eMarketer's Online Video Advertising report forecasts that number will rise to 60.4m in 2007.

Says report author and senior analyst David Hallerman: "In real-world terms . . . marketing campaigns can extend TV's reach to the online space, enticing the target audience to spend more time with a particular brand. It also means using the internet's ability to track consumers in ways that match up television commercials with online (and offline) activity."

He adds that full-service advertising agencies will become increasingly important as advertisers look to extend video assets across media.
