Access to email and information – as opposed to entertainment – are the two most popular uses of the internet, according to the PriceWaterhouseCoopers Consumer Technology Survey, 2000 .
The study, which sampled 2,500 web users in the USA, UK, Australia, Germany and France, found that Americans use the internet as an entertainment medium more than any other nation. Around 51% of Americans said they used the web for this purpose, as opposed to 42% in Australia.
However, 37% of Europeans tend to use online banking and financial services, ahead of the 28% elsewhere. Germans and Britons are also becoming more attracted to shopping online. Around 42% in each country claimed to use e-commerce, nearing the US total.
